Gather data for support

This is what support needs to diagnose your connection without back-and-forth.

To help you quickly, always include this in your email to netadmin@stw-bonn.de:

Who you are

  • your full name (main tenant and sub-tenant, if there is one)
  • address (street, number, city) and room number
  • your StudNet username, if known

What is happening

  • a precise description of the problem, including the full error message (a screenshot if possible)
  • when the problem occurred (e.g. 28 March 2024, 6:37 pm)
  • a photo of the network cable you're using (the label/type printed on it, and the plug)
  • the label on the wall socket, if there is one
  • your network configuration – see below

Windows

  1. Open Command Prompt

Open Windows search, type cmd, and press Enter.

  2. Get the network configuration

In Command Prompt, type the following command and press Enter:

    ipconfig /all

  3. Copy the output

Select the entire output in the window and copy it.

  4. Paste into a file

Open Notepad, paste the output, and save the file.

Send the saved file along with the other information to netadmin@stw-bonn.de.

macOS and Linux

First, send a screenshot of your network settings for the Ethernet adapter:

  • macOS: System Settings → Network
macOS system settings for the network adapter

If support asks for more detail, open a terminal and run these commands:

macOS:

ifconfig
netstat -nr -f inet
cat /etc/resolv.conf

Linux:

ip a
ip route
cat /etc/resolv.conf

Copy the output and send it as text in your email, or as a file attachment, to netadmin@stw-bonn.de.

Wi-Fi router

If a Wi-Fi router sits between your device and the wall socket and can't connect to the internet, support needs two screenshots from your router's configuration interface:

  • the router's status page (shows whether the WAN connection is up at all)
  • the router's WAN/internet settings page (shows the connection type in use)

You can reach the configuration interface via the address printed on the back of the router or in its manual (often http://tplinkwifi.net or an IP address such as 192.168.0.1). Login credentials are also printed on the back, unless you've changed them.
