Configure your router

Everything you need to set up in your router's web interface – pick your model once, then jump straight to the section you need.

Which router do you have?

Your choice applies to the whole page and is saved – you only make it once. Without a choice, every instruction is listed one after another.

I don't know my model

The model name and version number are printed on a label on the bottom or back of the router and on its box. Alternatively, you can recognize your device from its web interface:

This is the fallback – the model name on the device itself is always the safer choice.

Getting into the web interface

The address of the configuration page, plus username and password, are printed on the back or bottom of your router. Open the address in a browser while your computer is connected to the router.

Internet connection

Your router must obtain its internet connection automatically via DHCP (Dynamic IP / Automatic IP), not a fixed IP.

  1. Open Advanced.
  2. In the menu on the left, go to Network → Internet (on some models Network → WAN).
  3. Make sure Internet Connection Type is set to Dynamic IP. If not, select Dynamic IP and save.
  4. Also check under Operation Mode that the router runs in Router / Wireless Router mode, not as an access point or repeater.
  5. If you changed anything: wait at least 10 seconds, then unplug the router's power for at least 12 minutes.

  1. Open Advanced Settings → WAN.
  2. Under Internet Connection, set: WAN Connection Type Automatic IP, Enable WAN Yes, Enable NAT Yes, NAT Type Symmetric, Connect to DNS Server automatically Yes, DHCP query frequency Normal.
  3. Save with Apply.

IPv6

This requires IPv6 to be enabled for your account. Check and change that under Settings in your account.

  1. Open Advanced.
  2. Select IPv6 in the menu on the left.
  3. Apply the settings under Internet and LAN as shown in the screenshot for your model, then save.

  1. In the menu on the left, go straight to IPv6 → IPv6 WAN.
  2. Apply the settings as shown in the screenshot for your model, then save.

Open the IPv6 settings and apply the values as shown in the screenshot. Save with Apply.

5 GHz Wi-Fi

Use the 5 GHz network instead of 2.4 GHz whenever you can – it reduces interference from the many Wi-Fi networks in the dormitory. Check your device's specs, or just try it, to see if it supports 5 GHz.

TP-Link, blue interface (AX12, AX10, AX53, AX73)

  1. Open Advanced → Wireless → Wireless Settings.
  2. Enable 5GHz.
  3. Give the network a unique name (SSID), ideally with the suffix "_5G".
  4. Choose WPA/WPA2-Personal security, version WPA2-PSK, encryption AES, and set a password.
  5. Set Transmit Power to High and Mode to 802.11a/n/ac/ax mixed.
  6. Save and restart the router.

TP-Link, turquoise interface, single step (C6)

  1. Open Advanced → Wireless → Wireless Settings and switch to 5GHz.
  2. Enable Enable Wireless Radio.
  3. Give the network a unique name (SSID), ideally with the suffix "_5G".
  4. Choose WPA/WPA2-Personal, version WPA2-PSK, encryption AES, and set a password.
  5. Set Mode to 802.11a/n/ac mixed and Transmit Power to High.
  6. Save with Save and restart the router.

TP-Link, green interface (C7 v5)

  1. Under Dual Band Selection, choose both bands (2.4 and 5 GHz) and save.
  2. Go to Wireless 5GHz → Wireless Settings, give the network a unique name with the suffix "_5GHz", set Mode to 11a/n/ac mixed, and save.
  3. Go to Wireless 5GHz → Wireless Security, choose WPA/WPA2-Personal, version Automatic, encryption AES, set a password, and save.
  4. Restart the router.

TP-Link, turquoise interface, two steps (C20, C50)

  1. Go to Wireless 5GHz → Basic Settings, enable Wireless 5GHz, give the network a unique name with the suffix "_5G", set Mode to 11a/n/ac mixed, and save with Save.
  2. Go to Wireless 5GHz → Wireless Security, choose WPA/WPA2-Personal, version WPA2-PSK, encryption AES, set a password, and save.
  3. Restart the router.

ASUS

  1. Go to General → Network Map → System Status and switch to 5GHz.
  2. Give the network a unique name (SSID), ideally with the suffix "_5G".
  3. Choose WPA2-Personal as the authentication method, AES encryption, and set a WPA-PSK key.
  4. Save with Apply and restart the router.

To stop your devices from switching back to the 2.4 GHz network by accident, remove its saved Wi-Fi credentials once you've moved to 5 GHz.

Wi-Fi password

Change the default Wi-Fi password, for both the 2.4 GHz and the 5 GHz network.

Open Wireless Security or Wireless Settings, choose WPA/WPA2-Personal, version WPA2-PSK, encryption AES, and set a password. Save the setting.

Open General → Network Map → System Status, choose WPA2-Personal as the authentication method, set a WPA-PSK key, and save with Apply.

QoS – traffic priority

On newer Wi-Fi 6 routers, you should adjust the priority settings, otherwise streaming or video/voice calls can suffer from dropouts.

TP-Link, Wi-Fi 6 (AX10, AX53, AX73)

Open Advanced → QoS → Application Priority and set the priority of applications all the way to the right to Custom / High. Save the setting.
